1 NOTE Joe was graduated from Hillsborough High School, Tampa Florida in June 1925, at
2 CONT the age of 16.  He attended the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL for
2 CONT two years (1925-1927), where he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity.  Following
2 CONT his father's death in 1927, he found it necessary to drop out of college and
2 CONT seek employment to help support his family.  In August, 1927, he entered the
2 CONT employment of The Exchange National Bank of Tampa as a messenger.  Thus began a
2 CONT long and successful banking career.  Over the next several years he advanced
2 CONT through various departments of this bank, serving in such capacities as
2 CONT Bookkeeper and Teller.  In June, 1940 he left the Exchange National Bank to
2 CONT accept a position as Assistant Cashier of the Hernando State Bank in
2 CONT Brooksville, Florida.  At the time of his death he was Executive Vice
2 CONT President, Vice Chairman and Secretary of the Board of Directors of this bank.
2 CONT He was also a member of the organizing board of First American National Bank
2 CONT and served as Vice Chairman.  (Both Hernando State Bank and First American
2 CONT National Bank are now part of the SunTrust system of banks.)  Joe also served
2 CONT on numerous committees of the Florida Bankers Association.
1 NOTE Before moving to Brooksville, Joe served as President of the Tampa Chapter,
2 CONT American Institue of Banking, which is the Educational Section of the American
2 CONT Bankers Association.  He also served this chapter as Secretary, Vice President,
2 CONT and served for six years on its Board of Directors.
1 NOTE During World War II Joe served in the United States Coast Guard for two
2 CONT years.  He received a medical discharge, due to a bleeding ulcer, in May of
2 CONT 1944, shortly before his unit shipped out from New York to participate in the
2 CONT D-Day landings at Normandy.
1 NOTE Joe was a member and past President of the Brooksville Kiwanis Club, Secretary
2 CONT and Treasurer of the Hernando County Library Association, member of the Board
2 CONT of Directors of Hernando County Chamber of Commerce, and served on the Executive
2 CONT Board
2 CONT of the Gulf Ridge Council of Boy Scouts of America.  He was a member of the
2 CONT MerryMakers Club and Ye Mystic Krew of Gasparilla of Tampa.
1 NOTE Joe was very active in his church, First United Methodist of Brooksville.  He
2 CONT served several terms as chairman of the Adminsistrative Board, member of the
2 CONT Board of Trustees, Chairman of the Finance Committee, Church Lay Leader,
2 CONT Chairman of the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee and member of the Building
2 CONT Committee.  He served on many District Boards of the Florida Conference and was
2 CONT a member for several years of the President's Council at Florida Southern
2 CONT College in Lakeland.
1 NOTE In addition to banking, Joe was interested in the citrus industry, and was a
2 CONT member of the Brooksville Citrus Growers Association.

1 NOTE Dorothy, like her mother Alice Hale, attended the local schools of Hernando Co.
2 CONT FL and was graduated valedictorian of her class at Hernando High School in 1929.
2 CONT She attended Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, Georgia, for one year, and received
2 CONT her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Florida State College for Women (now Florida
2 CONT State University) in Tallahassee, FL, where she was active in campus affairs
2 CONT and a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, servins as Treasurer and President of
2 CONT the chapter.
1 NOTE After college, Dorothy lived in Brooksville, teaching for several years at
2 CONT Hernando High School, and later working at Hernando State Bank.  She helped
2 CONT organize the Alpha Delta Pi Alumnae Chapter in Brooksville and served as
2 CONT President for many years.  She was a charter member and first President of the
2 CONT Junior Service League of Brooksville; in 1982 this organization published a
2 CONT recipe book, "A Pinch of Sunshine," which was "lovingly dedicated to our first
2 CONT president, Mrs. Dorothy Mason.  For nearly fifty years, she has held the light
2 CONT that has kept us in touch with our heritage while leading us into the future."
1 NOTE She was active for many years
2 CONT in the Brooksville Women's Club and Music Club.  She is a former member and past
2 CONT President of Hernando High School P.T.A.  She was a member of the Lykes
2 CONT Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and served as a member of the Board of Directors
2 CONT of Hernando Resicential and Care Ministry, Inc.
1 NOTE Dorothy has been an active member of the First United Methodist Church of
2 CONT Brooksville for many years.  She taught in the Sunday School for 15 years, was
2 CONT Chairman of the Committee on Christian Education for eight years, and has
2 CONT served the United Methodis women as Circle Chairman, Treasurer, and President.
2 CONT She served on the Administrative Board for many years, was Chairman of the
2 CONT Pastor-Parish Relations Committee, a member of the Parsonage Committee, the
2 CONT Church Finance Committee, and the Tampa District Board of Missions and Church
2 CONT Extension.
1 NOTE Dorothy's nieces, Sarah Alice and Mary Celia McKethan, gave her the name
2 CONT "Dottee" when they were young, and it is by this name that she is
2 CONT affectionately known
2 CONT to all her nieces, nephews, and grandchildren along with many of their friends.
1 NOTE In 1994, Dorothy suffered a stroke which impaired both her speech and the use
2 CONT of her right arm and hand.  Through hard work, determination, and faith, she has
2 CONT effected a remarkable recovery, and she contiues to lead an independent and
2 CONT productive life.

1 NOTE Will attended North Carolina A & M College (now North Carolina State
2 CONT University), and began his working career as an employee of the Central of
2 CONT Georgia Railroad in Savannah, GA.  He move to Florida about 1900, where he was
2 CONT employed in the naval stores (turpentine) business.  He operated a turpentine
2 CONT still in Hernando County FL for a few years, and later operated one in Lake Co.
2 CONT FL.  He returned to Brooksville, FL in 1905 to become Cashier of the newly
2 CONT established Hernando State Bank, rising from that position to become the bank's
2 CONT President and Chief Executive Officer.  He was also active in the citrus
2 CONT industry and served as president of the Brooksville Citrus Growers Association.
2 CONT He was an elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Brooksville, a member of the
2 CONT Masonic Lodge and a Shriner.  He was a pioneer member of the Brooksville
2 CONT Kiwanis Club, and served as president of the Hernando County Chamber of
2 CONT Commerce.

1 NOTE   "Major A. A. McKethan, Clerk of the Superior Court of Cumberland County, and a
2 CONT leading and higly esteemed citizen of Fayetteville and the State, died in
2 CONT Highsmith Hospital Sunday night about 11 o'clock, from an acute attack of
2 CONT Bright's disease...
2 CONT   "Maj. McKethan, who was the third son of the late Alfred A. and L. McAlister
2 CONT McKethan, was born in February 1847, and was, therefore, at the time of his
2 CONT death, nearly 68 years of age.  He was a noble son of a noble sire, for like
2 CONT his father he was a grand man, true and loyal to friends, faithful in the
2 CONT discharge of the many onerous duties heaped on him during his busy life, and
2 CONT diligent in service to God, his country and his fellowman.
2 CONT   "He was a man absolutely honest and clean from all hypocrisy, deceit or
2 CONT false pretense.  To friend and foe alike he was truthful, and no man doubted
2 CONT the truth of a statement made by him.  No higher meed of praise can be bestowed
2 CONT on any mortal.  He was generous and charitable, and though a rugged, virile man
2 CONT ov vigorous action, he was filled with the milk of human kindness.  No appeal
2 CONT for help or succor was ever made to him in vain, and no man has died in the
2 CONT Upper Cape Fear section for many years whose death is more universally
2 CONT lamented, by white and black alike, then the death of Major McKethan.
2 CONT   "The life of Major McKethan was one of public service.  At the age of 16
2 CONT years, about 1863, he enlisted as a private in the Confederate Army, joining Co.
2 CONT H. of the 51st Regiment, Hoke's Bridage (sic), N. C. Troops.  His brother, the
2 CONT late Hector McKethan, was Colonel of the 51st Regiment, and his brother, the
2 CONT late E. T. McKethan, was a lieutenant of Co. H.  Deceased was later promoted to
2 CONT a lieutenancy.  He received a flesh wound in the trenches before Richmond,
2 CONT which necessitated his absence from duty for a few weeks, but as soon as he
2 CONT became convalescent he returned to his post, where he served gallantly until
2 CONT Lee's surrender.
2 CONT   "Major McKethan held many positions of honor and trust.  For some years he
2 CONT was Major of the Fayetteville Independent Light Infantry Company of
2 CONT Fayetteville, and at the time of his death was Clerk of the Superior Court of
2 CONT Cumberland County, a director of the Fourth National Bank and of the Cumberland
2 CONT Savings and Trust Company of Fayetteville, chairman of the Board of Deacons of
2 CONT First Presbyterian Church, and was prminent in all public affairs.
2 CONT   "Major McKethan, at the time of his death had been clerk of the Superior
2 CONT Court for 16 years, and if he had lived to serve out the term for which he was
2 CONT elected last fall he would have been clerk for 20 years of contiunous service.
2 CONT In all those years he was the same courteous, kindly public servant, treating
2 CONT the highest and the lowest with consideration and doing much, in his capacity
2 CONT of clerk, which was not required of him...
2 CONT   "Major McKethan was twice married, first in 1869 to Kate McLaurin of
2 CONT Fayetteville, who bore him five children, and second by Celia Utley of
2 CONT Fayetteville, who bore him two sons, and who preceded him to the grave a few
2 CONT years ago.  He is survived by his seven children, as follows:  Miss Kae (sic)
2 CONT D. McKethan, Mrs. T. J. Purdie and Miss Augusta McKethan of Fayetteville, Mr.
2 CONT W. M. McKethan of Brooksville, Fla., Mrs. Clifton Rankin of Fayetteville, Mr.
2 CONT J. U. McKethan of Brooksville, Fla., and Mr. Hector McKethan of Fayetteville;
2 CONT also by four nephews - Maj. E. R. McKethan, Lieutenant A. A. McKethan, Dr. J. A.

2 CONT Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock.  It was one of the largest funerals ever
2 CONT held in Fayetteville, hundreds of citizens, white and colored, assembing (sic)
2 CONT to pay the last tribute of esteem and sorrow to the memory of a leader leader
2 CONT (sic) among men, a loyal citizen a Christian gentleman, a loving father and a
2 CONT true friend...
2 CONT   "The two military companies, the Fayetteville Independent Light Infantry (of
2 CONT which deceased was once Major commanding) and Co. F, N. C. N. G., attended in
2 CONT ranks and marched at the head of the procession, followed by Camp 852 of the
2 CONT Confederate Veterans, after which came the Cumberland County Bar and the county
2 CONT officials.  The J. E. B. Stuart Chapter, U. D. C., also attended in a body.
2 CONT   "The unusual attendance of colored attested in high degree to the fact that
2 CONT Major McKethan was a true friend to all the people and one who was strictly
2 CONT just in his dealings.  To the left of the pulpit many seats, reserved for them,
2 CONT were occupied by esll known colred men of the town, among them being Jack
2 CONT Campbell, and aged blacksmith and former slave of the family, who worked for
2 CONT years in the cKethan Carriage Manufactory here, and who was one of the colored
2 CONT men who bore to the grave the father of the deceased, the Late Alfred A.
2 CONT McKethan.
2 CONT   "By request of Mayor mcNeill all business houses were closed fromt three to
2 CONT four o'clock in honor of Major McKethan's memory.
2 CONT   "The burial was in the family plot in Cross Creek Cemetery...

1 NOTE J. J. Hale was a merchant, citrus grower and farmer.  He was a member of the
2 CONT mercantile firms J.J. Hale & Co., Hale & Lykes, and E. C. Hale & Co.  He and
2 CONT the Hon. J. N. C. Stockton of Jasksonville, and other associates, financed
2 CONT the extension of the Florida Southern (later the Atlantic Coast Line)
2 CONT railroad from Croom to Brooksville.
1 NOTE The house he built in 1882 in Brooksville, FL is still standing, one block west
2 CONT of the Hernando Co. Courthouse, address 7 N. Orange Avenue, and is occupied by

2 CONT South.  He lived and died an honored citizen of that grand old town.  He was
2 CONT intensely loyal to the South, "a good old rebel."

2 CONT Carriage Factory, by Lucile Johnson.  Alfred Augustus MacKethan Sr. was
2 CONT connected with a business that was vital to his time, the A.A. MacKethan and
2 CONT Sons Carriage Factory.  Born in 1809, he died in 1890...The records in

2 CONT establishment of the Carriage Factory was his lifetime accomplishment, having

2 CONT Warehouse that had earlier belonged to Paris J. Tillinghast.

1 NOTE In addition to his obituary, numerous tributes to him were published in various
2 CONT North Carolina newspapers at the time of his death.  Some of these were pasted
2 CONT into his family Bible.  They are too lengthy to quote in full, but some
2 CONT excerpts are included here:
1 NOTE   "Through the chairman of the committee, Col. C. W. Broadfoot, the following
2 CONT resolutions were submitted and unanimously adopted:
2 CONT   "The people of Fayetteville having lost a popular, respected and honored
2 CONT fellow-citizen by the death of Alfred A. McKethan, and having met in town
2 CONT meeting to give public expression to their sense of the loss they have
2 CONT sustained, would call attention to some of the prominent points in the
2 CONT character of him they mourn.
2 CONT   "In the long list of the honored dead who lived in Fayetteville none ever gave
2 CONT more earnest, hearty and untiring services in places of public trust to his
2 CONT fellow-citizens than Alfred A. McKethan.  His time, talents and purse were at

2 CONT   "His word was as "current Money" with the merchant, and passed undisputed
2 CONT wherever he was known.  His charity was open, ready, wide and gracious.  He

2 CONT of any worth, then was he rich indeed.
2 CONT   "Impulsive by disposition, fiery by temperament, ardent in all he undertook,
2 CONT he was an active, zealous, whole-souled man - in the front rank always when any
2 CONT danger was to be met or any responsibility borne.
2 CONT   "A prominent figure in our town and county for more than half a century, we
2 CONT look back upon his four-score years with prie, and say to our youth:  Emulate
2 CONT his devotion to the public good, remember his unbounded charity, and learn to
2 CONT live as he did for others and nor for self.
2 CONT   "Catching the inspiration of his life work, now that we are about to lay him
2 CONT away, we speak these kindly words to his memory, and cover with the mantle of
2 CONT charity his faults.

2 CONT   "In 1832 Mr. McKethan founded the great carriage factory on Person street,
2 CONT which has been continued without interruption for nearly 60 years, and which
2 CONT was for a long time the most extensive establishment of the kind, in its output
2 CONT and operations, in the South.  His only living child, Maj. A. A. Mckethan, is
2 CONT now the surviving partner of the business.
2 CONT   "The funeral services took place from the Presbyterian Church at 3:30 o'clock
2 CONT on Monday afternoon, Rev. T. P. Barclay officiating, assisted by the Rev. C. W.

2 CONT tolled, and the vast concourse attending the remains to their last resting

2 CONT knew he was the most approachable.  At all times he was ready to hear the
2 CONT humblest of both races, always ready to help the distressed...While on a visit
2 CONT to Fayetteville in the winter of 1873 I saw the old gentleman passing the
2 CONT Market House, accompanied by a Confederate soldier, humbly clad.  My attention
2 CONT was directed to them by a remark by a citizen.  'There he goes again: that
2 CONT makes three for this morning.'  On inquiry I learned that ever since the close
2 CONT of the war Mr. McKethan was in the habit of giving to every needy soldier whom
2 CONT he chanced to meet a suit of clothes, sometimes a suit of flannel
2 CONT under-clothing, and my informant stated..."He has been doing this thing ever
2 CONT since the war, and no body seems to know it.  I found it out by accident..."

2 CONT or lines as one would expect.  However, it was clearly used to record births
2 CONT and deaths over a period of years, and the handwriting is different for
2 CONT different entries.

2 CONT to the vicinity of present-day Brooksville in the 1850's, where he acquired
2 CONT several tracts of land, including one from a federal land grant, and where he
2 CONT operated a lumber mill.  He and an adjoining landowner donated 15 acres each
2 CONT for the formation of the town of Brooksville as the county seat of Hernando
2 CONT County, Florida; he died before the transaction was completed, and the transfer
2 CONT of title was handled by the administrator of his estate, William Hope.

1 NOTE Capt. Jack and his wife Nancy followed his father to Florida, lived for a time
2 CONT near Tallahassee, and finally settled in Alachua Co.  During the Second
2 CONT Seminole War he raised a company of Mounted Volunteers and was elected its
2 CONT captain in February, 1840.  After some months of service as a unit of the
2 CONT Florida Militia, it was mustered into the service of the United States.  After
2 CONT the war he received a land bounty of 160 acres for this service.
1 NOTE By 1849 they were living in Benton (Hernando) County Florida, where he was
2 CONT elected a County Commissioner in 1849, 1852, 1857, and 1863.
1 NOTE In 1861 he volunteered for local service in Capt. James H. Breaker's company of
2 CONT Old Guards Mounted Rangers, which was disbanded after several months due to
2 CONT "the advanced age of its members."
1 NOTE In Benton (Hernando) Co. Capt. Jack and Nancy built a log home which they
2 CONT shared with their neighbors for religious services as well as occasionally as a
2 CONT fort against unfriendly Indians.  When they moved across Hancock Lake, about
2 CONT 1865, in order to be near a daughter, they donated this house to the community
2 CONT for a permanent church.  The Townsend House Methodist Church was built in the
2 CONT 1880's near this site.  The Townsend House Cemetery, also near this site, is
2 CONT the burial place of Capt. Jack, Nancy, and many of their descendants.  It is
2 CONT located just beyond Spring Lake, FL on the Pasco-Hernando County line.

2 CONT This is among a group of ten stones moved from the McKethan Family Cemetery
2 CONT on John McKethan's plantation about one mile north of the church.
2 CONT In her 1975 book, Alma McKethan McBride wrote about finding stones for
2 CONT other members of John McKethan's family in the old cemetery, but said that
2 CONT no stone for Grissella could be found.  A listing of the stones in this
2 CONT old cemetery (from the Cumberland County Cemeteries section of the Cumberland
2 CONT County GenWeb page on the WWW) includes "A broken, unreadable tombstone with
2 CONT no base to indicate its proper location" and there was "one additional
2 CONT semiburied stone;" perhaps one of these was Grissella's marker.  All stones,
2 CONT including these two, were moved to Bluff Presbyterian Church in 1986.
1 NOTE Alma McKethan McBride gave the date of John and Grissella's marriage as 1771,
2 CONT at the Bluff Church.  She stated that Grissella's  father Alexander McAllister
2 CONT was adamantly opposed to the marriage and refused to attend the wedding.  In a
2 CONT letter (probably late 1771) to Mary, the wife of his brother Hector MacAlester
2 CONT in Scotland, Alexander McAlester wrote "I have no adision in my famile since my
2 CONT last
2 CONT to my brother.  It is Deminished.  My two oldest Daughter have made runon away
2 CONT marriages.  Since they were both well fixed I never have Spok to them nor I
2 CONT believe I never shall."  He apparantly retained this attitude until his death,
2 CONT when he left only a token inheritance to John McKethan, the husband of his
2 CONT deceased daughter Grissella.  (The other daughter
2 CONT mentioned in this letter is Janet McAlester who married Malcolm McNeill, son of
2 CONT Archibald McNeill and Janet "Jennie Bahn" Smith).  This letter was published in
2 CONT "Mac-Alisdair Clan," the journal of the Clan McAlister of America, Dec. 1995.

2 CONT upward fronting the river and running one mile back."

1 NOTE According to AMcA, he came from Loup, Islay, off Argyleshire, Scotland, to
2 CONT Wilmington, NC in 1736, where he operated a tavern for several years.  This is
2 CONT based upon a letter addressed to him from a mcAlister and a McRae from the old
2 CONT country, inquiring as to Hector, son of Margaret Johnston McNeill and Laughlin
2 CONT McNeill.   He returned to Scotland in 1739 or 1740, where he married Mary
2 CONT McNeill, who died on the return voyage.  His third wife Jean Colvin was born on
2 CONT the same voyage.  There are several problems with this story: First, Loup is NOT
2 CONT on Islay but located on the mainland where Kintyre and Knapdale meet at Tarbert.
2 CONT His father Coll owned Balinakill, which was located near there.  Second, some
2 CONT researchers, including William C. Fields, have his DOB much later, and him
2 CONT coming to NC as a minor with his father Coll.  Third, in his letters he refers
2 CONT to children by his first wife (Flora McNeill) and his second wife (Jean
2 CONT Colvin), not his second and third wives.
1 NOTE The story of the first wife is from Hugh McLean (1810-1899), uncle and guardian
2 CONT of the author, who reports that his aunt Charity McAllister (1802-1889)

2 CONT with his father, in the great carriage works.  At the beginning of the war he
2 CONT entered the service of the Confederacy as on of the lieutenants of the "OLd
2 CONT Independent Company" of Fayetteville, N.C., F.I.L.I.  By act of legislature,
2 CONT all the lieutenants of this company ranked as captains, and the captain as
2 CONT major.  In the First North Carolina Volunteers this company first saw war.  At
2 CONT the close of their six months enlistment, young McKethan enlisted a company for
2 CONT the war, and by unparalled bravery and assiduous attention to duty became
2 CONT the honored colonel of the valiant Fifty-first North Carolina Volunteers
2 CONT distinguished on many a bloody field.  His men called him "Old Hec," and he
2 CONT did not know what fear was.  With his health wrecked by the vicissitudes of
2 CONT war, he lived with his father in Fayetteville, and there died, without issue.

2 CONT Co. McKethan.  Col Hector McKethan, the brave commander of the 51st N. C.
2 CONT Regiment, during the rebellion, died at the residence of his father in
2 CONT Fayetteville last Sunday afternoon.  Col McKethan, at the beginning of the war,
2 CONT entered the service of his country as first-lieutenant of Co. H, Fayetteville
2 CONT volunteers, and at the expiration of the first six months, the term for which
2 CONT his company enlisted, he returned home with the remnant of the Fayetteville
2 CONT battalion who had not yet re-enlisted, but not to remain.  Shortly after his
2 CONT return, cooperating with others, Col McKethan succeeded in organizing the 51st
2 CONT regiment and again entered the army.  He was soon thereafter elected Colonel,
2 CONT and from that date to the close of the struggle proved himself worthy of the
2 CONT distinguished honor he enjoyed.  He was a brave soldier, a discreet and valiant
2 CONT commander, and distinguished himself on many a bloody battle field.  Having the
2 CONT esteem  of his soldiers, they followed his lead and obeyed his command with a
2 CONT readiness which fully attested their devotion to him as a comrade and their
2 CONT confidence in his skill as their leader.  More than once did he return from
2 CONT bloody contests with but a small number of those courageous fellows who entered
2 CONT with him.  Just before the close of the war Col. McKethan was called to act as
2 CONT Brigadeer-General (sic) during the temporary absence of that officer, and was

2 CONT its own, Mr. E. T. McKethan, a citizen whose whole life had been devoted to the
2 CONT service of his Divine Master, and in this good work he had become
2 CONT particulary prominent - at the same time he had never neglected the
2 CONT duties which necessarily devolve upon all good citizens, and as such
2 CONT was the pioneer in the work of rebuilding the town and was ever ready to
2 CONT contribute to the welfare of his native home.  While full of public spirit, his
2 CONT chosen vocation was to administer to those in distress, to aid in
2 CONT doing good, and to this end as a faithful christian he dovoted his
2 CONT life.  He was prominent in all things that tended to spread the
2 CONT Gospel of Christ, and among the monuments of his faithful service,
2 CONT the Campbelton Mission School will bear abundant proof  Here for sake of the
2 CONT many little ones, whose lives were spent in ignorance of their Saviour, he

2 CONT love and mercy were his special delight, his morning prayer, his daily thoughts
2 CONT and the song he sang for his evening's lullaby was, what work can I find to do

2 CONT of the faithful, after they are delivered from the burdens of the flesh, are
2 CONT in joy and felicity."  Never have we seen such respect paid to any one, as was

2 CONT Every store in town was closed, and its appeared as if every one had come to
2 CONT do honor to the memory of this faithful servant.  Surely, it was not honor

1 NOTE Coll was one of a group of merchant venturers who bought a boat in 1739, filled
2 CONT it with farmers, tradesmen and poor "aristocrats" and sailed directly from
2 CONT Kintyre to Wilmington, NC.  They moved up the Cape Fear River in barges, to the
2 CONT location of present-day Bluff Church.  As they moved up the river, various
2 CONT families were landed on either side. (Robert M. McAllister, Historian, The Clam
2 CONT McAlister of America).
1 NOTE According to the journal article cited above, the ship was the "Thistle" of
2 CONT Saltcoats, Ayrshire, and it sailed from Campbelltown and Gigha on 6 June, 1739.
2 CONT There were five Scottish gentlemen (the other four Campbells and McNeills,
2 CONT mostly relations by marriage) and some 90 poor families, totaling 350 souls in
2 CONT all.  In 1740, these gentlemen were given large land grants and exemption from
2 CONT taxes together with a money grant to help establish themselves in their new
2 CONT country.  This was the first large emigration of Scots settlers to America
2 CONT reorded, and all came from the mainland of Kintyre and the adjacent islands of
