According to AMcA, he came from Loup, Islay, off Argyleshire, Scotland, to Wilmington, NC in 1736, where he operated a tavern for several years. This is based upon a letter addressed to him from a mcAlister and a McRae from the old country, inquiring as to Hector, son of Margaret Johnston McNeill and Laughlin McNeill. He returned to Scotland in 1739 or 1740, where he married Mary McNeill, who died on the return voyage. His third wife Jean Colvin was born on the same voyage. There are several problems with this story: First, Loup is NOT on Islay but located on the mainland where Kintyre and Knapdale meet at Tarbert. His father Coll owned Balinakill, which was located near there. Second, some researchers, including William C. Fields, have his DOB much later, and him coming to NC as a minor with his father Coll. Third, in his letters he refers to children by his first wife (Flora McNeill) and his second wife (Jean Colvin), not his second and third wives.

The story of the first wife is from Hugh McLean (1810-1899), uncle and guardian of the author, who reports that his aunt Charity McAllister (1802-1889) reported only two wives.

Dates from notes compiled by Jane McKethan Rankin

His North Carolina plantation was called Barmore, and was located near the present town of Wade, about 12 miles northeast of Fayetteville. (CMA)

Alexander was on of the original elders of The Bluff Church, organized in 1758. He was colonel of the Cumberland County Militia, member from Cumberland of the Provincial Congress held at Hillsboro, NC august 21, 1775, and the Provincial Congress held at Halifax April 4, 1776. He was a member of the Committee of Safety for Wilmington District, member of the committee appointed by the Provincial Congress, August 23, 1775 "to interview the Highlanders and explain to them the nature of the controversy with Great Britain." He was a member of the North Carolina Senate 1787, 1788, and 1789.
