Notes
From Harnett County Heritage: "John Smith of Johnston co (for whom the town of
Smithfield was named) purchased property in 1752 & 1760 from Joeffrey Dawson
that he had received through a royal grant in 1737. This land was the site of
Smith's Ferry which was opposite the Lower Little River on the E band of the
CFR. The land passed to John;s son alexander Smith who m. elizabeth Whitfield,
dau of William Whitfield of Lenori Co. alexander built his home 1/2 mi NE of
the ferry. his children were Rachel, Mary Elizabeth, Sarah, & John. The land
passed to son John who in 1843 deeded land to his 3 sons then living, Farquhard
c, John C, & William T. Smith. the children of Farquhard C. Smith & Sarah
slocumb Grady include Susan, John D., isabella, mary C., Elizabeth E., Walter
Douglas, & Edward who left no descendants. Other children were alexander,
Curtis, & James who moved to TX. also Sarah slocumb smith who m. Thomas J
Purdie, Dr. Farquhard C. Smith, Jesse Slocumb Smith, Jane Smith, & Henry e.
Smith."
