After their marriage, Sarah Ann Townsend and Thomas Cook Ellis settled on land in the Annutaliga section of Hernando Co. FL, movet to Hillsborough Co. FL in 1850, then back to Hernando Co. where he wa a County Commissioner 1859-1862 and 1864-1865. They eventually moved back to Alachua Co., settleng in Gainseville in a home located where the Stegel Building later stood. He was Justice of the Peace for alachua Co. FL in 1843, and was elected Sheriff of Alachua Co. in 1845 and 1848. In the Seven Years Seminole War he was captain of a company of the 1st Regiment, Florida Mounted Militia, in which his father-in-law Light Townsend served. He was a member of the Florida Democratic Executive Committee 1860-1864.
