Light and Phoebe moved to Liberty Co. GA about 1793.

He served as a private in Capt. John Winn's Company of Infantry, 2nd Georgia Militia in the War of 1812. Quoting from "The Seven Townsend Brothers of Texas,": "His name appears on a muster roll Jan. 18 to Feb. 26, 1815, dated Riceborough, GA, April 22, 1815, when he joined rendezvous. He was discharged Feb. 26, 1815. His home was at Riceborough." Riceborough was a town located on the Newport River, Liberty Co. GA.

A deed recorded in Liberty Co. GA reads: "Light Townsend of McIntosh Co. GA. to William Smith of Liberty Co. Ga. 100 a. on Doctor's Creek, Jan. 20, 1815 Bk. A, P. 283, Wit: John Townsend."

Light was appointed administrator of the estate of Mrs. Letty Carter on Aug. 5, 1822 in Liberty Co. GA.

Light moved his family and slaves to Jefferson Co. FL, where he was deeded land in 1828. Soon after 1830 he acquired land near Newnansville, Alachua Co. FL and was living there when the Seven Year War with the Seminole Indians (1835-1842) began. He was for a short while a member of the company of Capt. Thomas Cook Ellis (his son-in-law), 1st Regiment, Florida Mounted Militia. From August to December, 1840 he was a member of the same regiment, but mustered into United States service under the command of Col. W. I. Bailey.

Shortly after the death of his wife Phoebe, Light disposed of his land near Newnansville and bought 200 acres in the Chocochatta Settlement of Benton (Hernando) Co. FL, six miles south of what is today Brooksville, FL, in order to be nearer his son John "Capt. Jack" Townsend and several daughters, all married with families of their own. He died on this land and is said to be buried there.
