AMcA Vol. I, II-4-1-1; Vol. II, III-7-1. He never married.

He was a colonel in the 51st NC Regiment, CSA, badly wounded in the War at Fort Harrison. In AMcA, Rev. Mcallister writes (on p. 140

where it is misplaced under the listing for his nephew of the same name): "Col H. McA. McKethan was a promising young business man in Fayetteville, N. C., with his father, in the great carriage works. At the beginning of the war he entered the service of the Confederacy as on of the lieutenants of the "OLd Independent Company" of Fayetteville, N.C., F.I.L.I. By act of legislature, all the lieutenants of this company ranked as captains, and the captain as major. In the First North Carolina Volunteers this company first saw war. At the close of their six months enlistment, young McKethan enlisted a company for the war, and by unparalled bravery and assiduous attention to duty became the honored colonel of the valiant Fifty-first North Carolina Volunteers distinguished on many a bloody field. His men called him "Old Hec," and he did not know what fear was. With his health wrecked by the vicissitudes of war, he lived with his father in Fayetteville, and there died, without issue. He never got over the disaster at Fort Harrison."

In the Confederate Report from Battery Wagner, July 18, 1863 by Gen. William Booth Taliaferro, CSA (available on the World Wide Web at http://www.awod.com/gallery/probono/cwchas/tall.html) the 51st North Carolina is praised, along with the Charleston Battallion, for "gallantly" maintaining "their positions and" driving "the enemy back quickly from their front, with immense slaughter." Gen. Talliaferro later writes "General McKethan's regiment, Fifty-first North Carolina troops...gallantly sought their position under a heavy shelling, and maintained it during the action. Col. McKethan, Lietenant-colonel [C. R.] Hobson and Major McDonald are the field officers of this regiment and deserve special mention." "The assailants consisted of troops from...the 54th Massachusetts (Negro) Regiment under Col. [R. G.] Shaw who was killed..." This assault on Fort Wagner is the climactic ending of the movie "Glory" which is about the 54th Massachusetts Regiment.

We cannot identify "General McKethan" and can only assume that, since Hector was in command of the 51st, Gen. Talliaferro mistook his rand, as well as that of his brother E. T. McKethan.

From the Civil War Online WWW site (http://web2.airmail.net/mbusby/scharles.htm): The Confederate Army Engaged at Charleston

Garrison Brig. General William B. Taliaferro 32nd Ga. Col. George P. Harrison, Jr. 31st N.C. Lieut. Colonel C. W. Knight 51st N.C. Colonel Hector McKethan Charlestown (S.C.) Battalion Lieut Colonel P. C. Gaillard (w) 7th S. C. Battalion Major J. H. Rion

The 51st N.C. under Col. H. McKethan was engaged in the siege operations at Charleston S.C. August - September, 1863. (This is listed on the same web site).

Other files at Civil War Online include

The Confederate Forces Engaged In The Richmond Campaign, listing the 51st NC under the command of Col. Hector McKethan in the Richmond and Petersburg Defenses.

Entry in the A. A. McKethan family Bible: "Died at home Nov. 6, 1881 at 10 minutes to 4 P.M. Sunday. 'Hector McA McKethan'. Funeral from the Presbyterian Church Nov. 7th at 3 P.M. buried with 'Masonic & military' honors. Hymns 616 & 635. Scripture 90th Psalm & 1st Corinthians part of 15th Chapter. The services conducted by 'Rev J. R. Brooks'."

Obituary from the Laurinburg, N.C. Enterprise, Wed. Nov. 9, 1881: "Death of Co. McKethan. Col Hector McKethan, the brave commander of the 51st N. C. Regiment, during the rebellion, died at the residence of his father in Fayetteville last Sunday afternoon. Col McKethan, at the beginning of the war, entered the service of his country as first-lieutenant of Co. H, Fayetteville volunteers, and at the expiration of the first six months, the term for which his company enlisted, he returned home with the remnant of the Fayetteville battalion who had not yet re-enlisted, but not to remain. Shortly after his return, cooperating with others, Col McKethan succeeded in organizing the 51st regiment and again entered the army. He was soon thereafter elected Colonel, and from that date to the close of the struggle proved himself worthy of the distinguished honor he enjoyed. He was a brave soldier, a discreet and valiant commander, and distinguished himself on many a bloody battle field. Having the esteem of his soldiers, they followed his lead and obeyed his command with a readiness which fully attested their devotion to him as a comrade and their confidence in his skill as their leader. More than once did he return from bloody contests with but a small number of those courageous fellows who entered with him. Just before the close of the war Col. McKethan was called to act as Brigadeer-General (sic) during the temporary absence of that officer, and was wearing the epauletts (sic) of that office when the conflict ended. Brave and generous as he was, he's gone. Peace to his ashes; and may his surviving comrades, who laid him to rest at the tomb with military honors, see that his grave's kept green!"
