He earned an A. B. at the University of North Carolina in 1860. He served as a Lieutenant, Company K, 51st NC Regiment, CSA, and was an Elder of First Presbyterian Church, Fayetteville, NC. AMcA Vol. I, II-4-1-2; Vol. II, III-7-2.

Entry in the A. A. McKethan family Bible: Edwin T. McKethan Born 8 Feby 1840. Also in this Bible: E T McKethan & Jane W Robeson married Aug. 22, 1867. This Bible is currently (1997) in the possession of Mrs. Dorothy McKethan Mason of Brooksville, Florida.

Obituary pasted into the A. A. McKethan family Bible (no indication of newspaper): Death of Mr. E.T. McKethan. - On Sunday last, death claimed for its own, Mr. E. T. McKethan, a citizen whose whole life had been devoted to the service of his Divine Master, and in this good work he had become particulary prominent - at the same time he had never neglected the duties which necessarily devolve upon all good citizens, and as such was the pioneer in the work of rebuilding the town and was ever ready to contribute to the welfare of his native home. While full of public spirit, his chosen vocation was to administer to those in distress, to aid in doing good, and to this end as a faithful christian he dovoted his life. He was prominent in all things that tended to spread the Gospel of Christ, and among the monuments of his faithful service, the Campbelton Mission School will bear abundant proof Here for sake of the many little ones, whose lives were spent in ignorance of their Saviour, he established a Sunday School, which he through winters cold and summer's sun has faithfully served, giving freely to it his time and means, sparing nothing that was necessary. "Feed My Lambs" has been his loving, faithful duty, and those who he has so tenderly cared for, on Monday evening in a body paid a handsome tribute to the memory of their loved and loving teacher. Mr. McKethan was a true christian, meek and humble, a devoted follower of Jesus, and in all christian work loved to do his part, and among those most prominent in establishing the Young Men's Christian Association, none rejoiced to see it prosper more than he. No Minister, who had consecrated his life to the service of his Master could have been more faithful than he. "The poor and needy, the sick and aflict (sic) were his special care, missions of love and mercy were his special delight, his morning prayer, his daily thoughts and the song he sang for his evening's lullaby was, what work can I find to do in the service of my Master? He has departed in the Lord, "with shom the souls of the faithful, after they are delivered from the burdens of the flesh, are in joy and felicity." Never have we seen such respect paid to any one, as was paid to his memory on Monday evening, when his body was consigned to the tomb. Every store in town was closed, and its appeared as if every one had come to do honor to the memory of this faithful servant. Surely, it was not honor alone to him, but a proof that every one honors and respects a faithful christian. May his example cause us to bless god's holy name for the testimony that is given us in those who depart this life in his faith and fear, and who leave as a legacy the glorious fruits of a life well spent."

Information on his descendants was provided by Edwin R. MacKethan, III, who wrote (e-mail to Alice Mason, May 11, 1997) "Hector McKethan was a Colonel and in charge of the Fifty-first North Carolina Regiment at Battery Wagner in July 1863. E. T. was a Second Lieutenant in Company K and was later promoted to First Lieutenant. A. A. Jr. joined the 51st as a private in 1864 and was subsequently promoted to Second Lieutenant."
