Notes

He was born with defective vision, but was not in fact blind. He wore glasses from the age of ten (McBride).

Dates are taken from his tombstone in Old Bluff Church Cemetery: "Erected by Margaret McKethan in memory of her husband John McKethan who died Febry 24, 1817 age 71 ys." This stone was moved in 1986 from the McKethan family cemetery on John McKethan's Plantation, about one mile north of Bluff Church, in 1986, along with nine others.

State Records of North Carolina, by Walter Clark: Vol. XIII. (To Gov. Caswell) Cumberland County, 1st June 1778 Sir: Enclosed I send you my bond as directed by the council. I hope the sureties will be acceptable, you'll please to send me by the bearer Mr. John McKethan, the needful for me until the assembly meets. Mr. McKethan waits on your Excellency with regard to the election for soldiers to go to Camp. I wish the assembly may have left it in your power to give redress. If you have a spare copy of the law and will send it to me by the bearer it would greatly oblige your most humble servant. Farq'd Campbell. Vol. IVI 2/26/1782 letter from Hardy Sanders, Sheriff of Wake Co. to Gov. Burke that Mr. Fleetwood brought 376 steers into Wake Co. collected in Cumberland Co. from various persons including John McKethen, No. 113; Farquard Campbell, No. 12; Jno McNeill, No. 75; Daniel McNeil, No. 20. Vol XXI 12/5/1789 Mr. M'Callister presented a petition of John M'Kethen Sen, which was read, referred to the committee on propositions and grievances No. 1, and sent to the House of Commons 12/14/1789. The House met...Received from the Senate the Petition of John McKethan, Senr, and the petition of William Griffin. 12/14/1789 Received from the House of Commons the Petition of William Griffin, and the petition of John M'Kethan, each endorsed, "Read and referred as by the Senate:" 12/21/1789 The Chairman of the Committee of Propositions and Grievances delivered in the Memorial of Patrick Traverse and the Petition of John McKethin, which had in the course of this Sesion been referred to the Committee, Ordered that they be over until the next Assembly.

John had extensive land dealings in and around Cumberland Co. NC. The known records for these dealings are compiled in an appendix. However, one record is of special interest: Cumberland Co. Deed Book 7:412 1785 is from James McKeithan to John McKeithan my son, 640 acres granted to Col. William Forbes.

John's will, dated Feb. 5, 1815, names wife Margaret MacKethan, youngest two sons James and Dougald MacKethan, son John MacKethan, son Neill MacKethan, daughter Mary MacKethan, daughter Jennet Phillips, daughter Christian MacKethan, son-in-law Daniel Kyle, and grandchildren Angus and Grisillah Galbreadth; executors are wife Margaret, nephew Hector MacNeill, and friends John Smith and William Colvin.

The heirs of Dougal McKethan sold to David Sills, on Aug. 18, 1841, their undivided moiety (half interest) in land which descended to them by the death of Dougald. This land was part of a grant to John McKethan dated Dec. 17, 1774 and willed by John jointly to his sons James and Dougald McKethan. The heirs named were John McKethan, James McKethan, Neill McLeran & Christian McLeran his wife, Alexr Walker & Mary Walker his wife, Duncan McNeill attorney of Jannet Phillips, all of Cumberland Co (Sampson Co. NC Deed Book 26:420). At the same time, James McKethan sold to David Sills his half-interest in the same property (Sampson Co. NC Deed Book 26:424).

The estates of Neil McKeithan and Dougald McKeithan, who died in 1836, were divided among their heirs: Janet Phillips, John McKethan, Christian McLeran, James McKethan, Mary Walker wife of Alexander, Angus Culbreath, Grisella Culbreath, Neil Kyle, John Kyle, children of Robert Kyle. The deed mentions 200 acres patented by John McKethan Dec. 22, 1768 and a 1/4 part of 300 acres granted to James McKethan by letters patent Mar. 4, 1775. (Cumberland Co. NC Deed Book 45:216 Mar. 2, 1843).

Alma McKethan McBride lists another daughter, Catharine McKethan, but the source for this seems to be an error in a published abstract of John's will, where a daughter Catharine is listed. The actual will does not mention a Catharine, and there is no other evidence for her existence.
