He purchased the estate of Balinakill, Clachan in 1698. ("Coll McAlester of Tarbert," The Journal of The Clan McAlister of America, by Ian McDonald). Notes from Ian McDonald to Cecelia MacKethan Gambill: "A charter of Balinakill from Sir Duncan Campbell of Auchinbrech witnessed by Duncan Campbell and James Campbell son to Dugald Campbell in favour of Archibald McAlester of Tarbert is still preserved but however in 1704 Archibald sold the lands to Angus Campbell of Skipness." Also according to Mr. McDonald, in 1685 Archibald succeeded his father Ronald as Captain of Tarbert and 7th Chief.
