Notes

Emigrated to America in 1730, settling near Philadelphia. He was a Presbyterian minister who preached in both Gaelic and English. He was preaching in Lancaster County PA until his move, in 1757, to the Cape Fear River area of North Carolina, where he was instrumental in the establishment of the Bluff Church in Cumberland Co. From memorial stone: He organized Bluff, Barbecue and Longstreet Presbyterian Churches in 1758. Directory of Scots in the Carolinas 1680 - 1830, by David Dobson (Provided by Myrtle Bridges): "1730 - Cumberland - James Campbell born in Campbelltown, Argyllshire, during 1705. Emigrated from Scotland to America in 1730. Settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Licensed as a preacher in Pennsylvania 1735. Presbyterian minister on the Conewehoya. Married a Miss Kennedy. Settled on Cape Fear, N.C. 1758. Planter. Died in 1780. Buried Old Bluff Cemetery, cumberland County, N.C." [I think the burial place is wrong here; I believe he was buried on his property across the river from Bluff Church].
