!NOTES: He and his brothers were considerably younger than I. In my early adult years I remember being very fond of them. He attended North Texas State University in Denton, then became an aide to Senator Ralph Yarbrough in Washington. Following this he was editor of the Texas Observer, a regional liberal magazine. He was the author of a couple of book, one on foods. In 1982 he was elected Texas Agriculture Commissioner, and he served two terms until 1990 in that office. He is a master of the one-liner type joke or story. "A few months ago one of our Texas wines won a gold medal in of all places, California. Of course there was an earthquake within 24 hours of that award."
