!DEATH: Obit Abilene Texas Reporter News, August 19, 1948 front page. "Lee Duckworth Dies Suddenly. Lee Duckworth, 64, retired Abilene grocer died unexpectedly after suffering a heart attack at his residence, 542 EN 16th St at 8:30 this morning. He had been mowing the lawn and was found laying on the sidewalk by a passerby. ... In ill health for several years, he had retired from the grocery business because of his health. Mr. Duckworth was born March 22, 1884 in Fannin County. He moved to Abilene from Breckenridge in 1929. He was a member of the College Church of Christ. Suvivors include the widow; five daughters, Mrs. G. D. West of Richland, Wash. Mrs. Glenn L. Wallace of Abilene, Mrs. Presley Smith of Carrizo Springs, Tex. Mrs. Foy S Brantley of Albuquerque, N.M. and Mrs Arvin White of Rotan; four sisters Nina Duckworth of Loving, Mrs. Jim Boyd of Grandbury, Mrs. Lula Gray of Seymour, and Mrs Gladys Hathcock of Wichita Falls, the father J. A. Duckworth of Loving; four brothers Jack Duckworth of Jacksboro, Ivo Duckworth of Wichita Fallsa, and Irvin Duckworth of Los Angeles, Calif.; and two granddaughters and four grandsons."

!NOTES: From the funeral of Leola Duckworth Wallace McCollum: "Lee Duckworth was her father; he married Eula Pratt of Eliasville and to them were born five daughters -- La Verne, Leola, Irene, Estelle, and Jo Bill. Lee was a teacher. He taught in small schools. Early on, he made two desisions: (1) He would never teach his own children; he decided this as soon as the first daughter was born. (2) Then, as the other girls came along, he knew he wanted all of them to attend ACC (Abilene Christian College now Abilene Chistian University in Abilene, Texas). WHen his first daughter, La Verne (Mrs. West) was ready for school, he left teaching and went into the grocery business. His first store was in Newcastle, north of Breckenridge; then he opened a store in Breck (one of the first M Systems stores.) His first daughter, La Verne, entered ACC in the fall of 1926, and the second daughter, Leola came two years later. In fact, beginning with the fall of 1926 and running through the spring semester of 1939, there was always a Duckworth daughter in ACC and for several of those years there were two at a time. In 1928, Mr. and Mrs. Duckworth decided they had best move to Abilene, and so the first Duckworth grocery store in Abilene was opened at North 8th and Hickory. Ultimately, there were three Grocery stores. The 1934-35 Abilene City directory lists Duckworth Grocery Stores at 813 Hickory, 373 Walnut, and 1282 South 2nd street. When Abilene Christian made it's big move in 1929 from it's small and cramped campus on North First Street across the railroad tracks from Sayles Blvd. to the present spacious campus, the Duckworths built one of the early homes at the new location on EN 16th street, just a block or so from the campus. Mr. Duckworth died in 1948. He had retired from his business and was seemingly in good health but a heart attack took him. He was 64 but had accomplished his purposes. His five daughters has all graduated from ACC and had all married good men."
