!NOTES: Gardenhire records. Was sales manager for Texaco, Inc.

!NOTES: Lawton, Oklahoma, 12 Feb 1997: "I was born in Rockwall, Rockwall County, Texas on July 12, 1915. We lived on a fram 1 mile north of Rockwall on black mud roads. A model "T" got us to town were dad ran the local bucher shop having a slaughter house on the farm. Dad also ran a country rodeo and race track on weekends from July 4 through Labor Day. As a 10 year old, I ran the pop stand selling pop which was mostly strawberry. I went though school in Rockwall and played on 3 winning football teams as fullback weighing about 117 pounds. The Rockwall paper still publishes the picture of the 1931 team every year or so. After graduating from High School, I went to Denton, Texas to go to college. Having no money, I talked to the business manager who informed me that there were hundred or so boys in my condition and the best thing for me to do was to go back to the farm. Well, I went to see the Registar who knew a cousin of mine and told him my plight. He told me to sit on the steps and be out to talk to me. When he did come he simply said the Business Manager wanted to see me. I went to his office and he asked me if I would like to take up tickets at the picture show on Friday and Saturday nights for $2.00 per night and when I responded yes, he asked me if I would like to work on campus taking care of flower beds when needed at 35 cents per hours, and I said yes. Now I go to downtown about a mile from campus and walked in the City Cafe to seek a job as cook. I was hired to cook supper an for that I got my meals. Then I went to a girls rooming house where I notices an unused shack in the back and talked to the lady who owned it. I told her I would take care of her yard, etc. if she would let me live there. She said fine. So now I've gotta go to college, and I went straight through, graduating at age 20. I got a job to teach in Springtown, Texas where I stayed for 1 years and went to work for Texaco in the Dallas office. A year later, I was moved to Ft. Worth which I wanted because I had met a girl in Springtown that I wanted to be close to, and married the following year. We moved to Wichita Falls for 3 years and then back to Dallas for six years, then to Tucumcari, New Mexico for five years and then to Wichita Fallas, Texas for three years. We then went to Oklahoma City for 19 months at which time I became sales manager for the state living in Tulsa part of the time and Oklahoma City part of the time and stayed on that job for 11 years. I then retired and went to work for a Texaco wholesaler in Tulsa for 3 years. In 1978, we moved to Lawton, Oklahoma where our daughter lived and is a counsellor in the high school. Having known Lawton for a number of years prior to moving, I would have not chosen Lawton as a retirement place, but it has worked out and we have had a great time. I have a group I play golf with. We have a lot of lakes, and I fish about one day each week. I peddle auto supplies in a 50 mile radius which I've been doing since moving here to Lawton in 1978. So I stay busy. We have both stayed healthy and active. I belong to the Masonic Lodge and also enjoy church activities, etc. My wife, Frances plays bridge and is a member of PEO, and the garden club and two or three other clubs. She is really happy here. I do want to go back to my early childhood as Little Bud (James Homer) a cousin was born 4 years after Big Bud and that's where the name came from. When we were both young, we only lived a couple of houses apart, so we were partners in all activities. When he was 9 and I was 13, I had a Model T, and we were in the river bottom setting out sweet potatoes for Mr. Calloway. Little Bud had a paper route so about 5:00 he announced that he needed to go to town. I showed him how to drive and he took off. He said he went by his home and his mother was in the front yard and she fainted while he drove the Model T into our board fence to stop as I had failed to tell him how to stop the vechicle. I have many other good stories on him and me, but that is enough." (By Charles Franklin "Big Bud" Gardnenhire 1997)
