!NOTES: George was in the Confederate Pensioner's Homs in Austin, Texas and is buried in the Confederate Cemetery in Austin, Texas.

!NOTES: "George G. Gardenhire was born in Tennessee in 1830. The first recorded information found on him was 30 May 1850 in Kaufman County, Texas where he is listed as a chain carrier for survey no. 221 of 320 acres of land made for Reuben F. Gardenhire assignee of William Hodges. Reuben was entitled to this land by viture of certificate no. 960 issued by the commissioner of Mercer's Colony. (Land grant)

!NOTES: George G. married Mary Lou Farmer, daughter of Leroy and Nancy Farmer, on 1 Dec 1859 in Collin County, Texas. To George G and Mary Lou two sons were born, James Napoleon and George William. It is believed that Mary Lou died in the child birth while George G was in the Civil War.

!NOTES: "George G was with Leroy at the time he was having trouble with a neighbor over cattle getting into Leroy's corn field. One night whild checking the fence, they caught the neighbor driving his cattle into Leroy's corn field. It is thought that the neighbor started to attack Leroy with an axe. George G. shot and killed the neighbor. He was arrested and placed in jail at McKinney, Collin County, Texas. From his cell wndow, he made friends with the sheriff's little daughter who played near the jail. She handed him a long stick so he could mark line for her to jump. That night, he used the stick to reach the key to the cell and escaped. He stole a horse and rode south to Limestone County. Here he enrolled in Company B of the 10th Texas Infantry (Nelson's Reg't Texas Inf). He enrolled in the Army 5 November 1861 and served until the end of the war."

!NOTES: On 11 January 1863, he was captured along with his whole company in Arkansas and was sent to Camp Doulgas, Illinois where his name appears on the rolls of the prisoners on the 8th of February 1863. He was exchanged at City Point Virginia on 7 April 1863 and then entered the Army of Tennessee. July 1863 he was at Garysville, Georgia drawing extra pay of 25 cents per day as a teamster. September 1863 he was at Calhoun, Georgia. In 1899 George applied for a Civil War pension while living at Bee Cave, Travis County, Texas. The application was approved in 1900. He entered the Home for Confederate Soldiers in Austin where he lived until he died on 1 December, 1925 at the age of 95 years old.

!NOTES: After returning from the Civil War, George married his second wife (name unknown). Two children were born to this marriage, Sally and John Wesley. What happened to the children's mother is not known.

!NOTES: In April 1902, he was arrested in Montague County, Texas for the killing of Leroy's neighbor back in 1861 and was returned to Collin County for trial. The case was reviewed by the District Court and was declared quashed. This releasing Geroge G. from all chargers. The court listed nine reasons for declaring the case quashed.

!NOTES: Family legend says that in 1885-86 George drove a wagon hauling marble stones to the new State Capital Building that was under construction in Austin, Texas.

!NOTES: 3 July 1892 George married Mrs. Charity E. Baily in Blanco County, Texas. What happened to Cahrity E. has not been determined.
