!NOTES: In 1849 John and Agnes decided to move to Texas. They may have been influenced by Agnes' two brothers, George and Jord who were already in Texas and had established a home at Peatown, Rusk County, TX. John Watson built a houseboat, put his household furnshings, his wife and then eight children (Andrew had died in Marion Co, TN in 1840) into the houseboat and sailed it down the Tennessee River to the mouth of the Arkansas River. There they learned of a cholera epidemic down the river, so they sold the houseboat and boarded a steamboat to Pine Bluff, Arkansas. There they made a crop, then in the fall of 1850 they resumed their journey to Texas, arriving in Peatown 12 November 1850. There they established their home on the fram Agnes' brothers gave here when they moved on west. There the five youngest children were born. It was hard to make a living for such a large family but with all helping, they did well. The Civil War broke out soon after this. John thought the differeneces between the North and South could have been settled by arbitration. He has never reconciled to the action of the South. When Jefferson David died, John Watson was an old man, but he jumped up, threw his hat into the air and said "If I can't out do him any other way, I can out live him." When the war began, three of John Watson's boys, James, John, and Benton, enlisted without hesitation. Then Greorge went when he became old enough. Benton died at Oklaona, Mississippi and is buried there. John died near Austin, Arkansas and is buried there. James was seriously wounded at Chickamauga. John and Agnes were a very important part of the community, taking a part in all the activities of the day. John served as a County Officer at one time. He and four of his children were charter members of the Peatown Christian Church, which was organized in 1871. Watsons have been members of the Peatown Church ever since. Now, only one, Lillian Watson, is still a member."
