!BIRTH: From gravestone. Date agrees with Fannin Co.,Texas Census 1860 - 1900; Grayson Co., Texas census 1910. Also family members knowledge.

!MARRIAGE: Original marriage license (Fannin Co., Texas) in my files.

!DEATH: Copy of death certificate, Oklahoma State Health Department in my files. Also grandson, Clark A. Johnson, Sr., and my personal memory of the event. Picture of gravestone (Fairview Cemetery, Fannin Co.) in my files.

!CENSUS: 1870 Fannin Co TX; Publication M-593, Reel 1584; Sheet 174, Page 10. (Living with parents (A.W. Jolly). 1880 Fannin Co TX; E.D. 24; Publication T-9, Reel 1302; Sheet 365, Page 38. 1900 Fannin Co TX; E.D. 64; Publication T-623, Reel 1633; Sheet 9, Page 117. 1910 Grayson Co TX; E.D. 69; Publication T-624, Reel 1556; Sheet 8, Page 123. (Living in Sherman after her husband's death earlier that year. Daughters Mary B. and Amanda living with her. All working as dressmakers.)

!NOTES: She was born in Wilson Co., Tennessee (although I have not been able to find her listed either there or in Texas in 1860 census). Her brother, John, with her younger sisters came to Texas in 1856 (BIOGRAPHICAL SOUVENIR OF THE STATE OF TEXAS; F. A. Battey & Co.; Chicago, IL, 1898, p463).

!NOTES: Clark Johnson has a 1979 tape recording of Mrs. A. E. Johnson of Waco, Texas in which she states that Nancy was a very aristocratic person who liked flowery dresses, always wore a black ribbon band at her neck, and spoke in a rich Irish brogue. Neither older family members or I believe she spoke with a brogue. I have some personal memories of her, and remember her as a very happy, pleasant, frequently laughing person. She was warm and always seemed to enjoy her children, grandchildren, and great grand children. Even in her late years she still enjoyed bright colors and and wore brightly colored full length dresses. One of my prized possessions is a picture of me as an infant with her, two of my other great grandmothers, one great grandfather, and both sets of my grandparents. I have an earlier portrait of her wearing black, which leads me to believe this was made soon after the death of her husband. I still have a quilt which she pieced. This is an orange and white pattern. My wife quilted it, and we refer to it as our UT quilt. A local quilt expert states that the orange material in this quilt was very popular in the years from 1860-1880. I believe she pieced this quilt during the 1920's or 1930's. The local quilt expert is not able to identify the pattern. She walked with a limp, the result of an injured leg or hip sustained when she was hit by a street car in Dallas. (Source; my mother, Estelle (Ivie) Johnson).

!NOTES: After her husband died she lived with her daughter, Belle, who had a small farm near Denton, Texas. After her daughter married she spent most of her time with her son, James Will, in west central Texas. However she frequently spent several months each year with her children in Fannin County and Grayson County. She was on such a visit when she died. (Source; Ethel (Johnson) Adams, grandaughter, Tahoka, Texas.)

!NOTES: According to my father, it became apparent she would not live much longer. He and his father made funeral arrangements with a funeral home in Sherman, Texas. She went to stay with her daughter, Amanda (Johnson) Phillips, in Durant, Oklahoma, and died there on July 31, 1933. At her specific request her body was not embalmed prior to her burial. She was buried in Fairview Cemetery, Fannin County, Texas, north of Ector, beside her husband.

!NOTES: She died on the same day as my maternal grandmother, Effie (King) Ivie, who died in Floyada, Texas. Her body was alo returned to be buried in Fannin County. According to my mother, my sister, Mary, was ill at the time, and my aunt, Laura Belle (Johnson) Gilmour, stayed with my sister while my mother, father, and I went to my grandmother Ivie's funeral in Ravenna, Texas.
