!DEATH: Personal knowledge of Clark Johnson, Jr. Attended funeral. Copy of death certificate in my files. Picture of gravestone in my files.

!NOTES: He was a farmer most of his life, in Fannin County and Grayson County, Texas, and in Bryan County, Oklahoma. Retired in the late 1930's or early 40's, and spent the remainder of his life in Sherman, Texas. He was a very quiet person. He always enjoyed working with livestock. I remember him as being particularly fond of fruits and berries, or any fruit. Although he was not a fisherman, he enjoyed attending fish frys and eating fish. Until his retirement from farming he always kept milk cows and chickens. Using a hand cream separator he separated the cream from the milk. The cream was churned into butter (and excellent buttermilk). He always took very good care of his livestock, and kept excellent harness for them. For many years he drove a 1927 Willis-Knight touring car. This car was open on each side, but had side curtains that could be snapped on. These had isinglass windows. In colder weather these were used, along with a heavy robe or blanket for warmth. Since he rarely drove more than 20 miles per hour, this was adequate and comfortable. This family formed the "nuclear family" for their children and grand children. Theirs was the home where the family gathered for holidays. This usually included our family, Laura Belle, Lillie, Josie (Parker) and her family, Eula (Burnet) and her family. It frequently included his sisters, Mandy (Phillips) and her family and Belle (Payne) and her husband. Before some of his children moved to California they were usually present; Emmett and his family, Stella, and occassionally Leslie and his family. Everyone brought food, and there were multiple dishes with meats, vegetables, and desserts. These were times when the men ate at the "first table", and the women and children ate at the "second table". Sometimes we were quite hungry by the time the second table ate. These were the gatherings where I had contact with my cousins, aunts, and uncles. It is interesting that Mandy and Belle were frequently present, but I do not remember other brothers and sisters of Albert or "Ellie" being present. I usually spent a few weeks each summer with them, and one summer while my mother returned to Floydada to help care for her mother, I spent most of the summer with them. Grandpa had a small black horse (Ted) which he kept for riding and to help with the cows. He kept this horse long after he had any need for him, and I suspect he kept it so I would have a horse to ride when I visited them. (Information provided by Clark Johnson, Jr.)
