!BIRTH: Clark Johnson and Ruth (Hamrick) Johnson (son and daughter-in-law), Conroe, Texas; Lillie (Johnson) Hightower (daughter), Denison, Texas; Pages, probably from her family Bible where births and marriages recorded. These pages in Clark Johnson Jr.'s files.

!MARRIAGE: Original marriage license in Clark Johnson Jr.'s files. She and her sister, Alice E., married brothers.

!DEATH: Died 5:50 AM while visiting her daughter (Laura Belle Johnson) in Beaumont. Buried in Fairview Cemetery in Fannin County, TX.

!NOTES: She was a very outgoing person. She was more talkative than her husband. The sale of her portion of her mother's estate allowed them to buy the home in Sherman where she and her husband lived until their death. (315 N. Lee Street). This is my "Grandma". I usually spent a few weeks with them on the farm, wherever that might be, each summer. One entire summer was spent with them while my mother was in Floyada helping to care for her mother. As the first grandchild, I seemed to be a favorite of Grandma's. Later in life she visited me and my family when we lived in Sweetwater, so my children at least got to see and know her slightly. To a considerable degree, she was the central person in that family, and all returned to her. She always worked quite hard on the farm. I can rmember her chopping cotton in the summer, but leaving the field early to prepare the meals. She churned the butter from the cream Grandpa separated with a hand powered separator, and molded it in a wooden butter mold to be sold in the grocery store where they went each week. She carefully washed the eggs and put them in large cases which they also sold to the grocer. This provided most of their money for food staples and clothing during most of the year. In the fall she picked cotton, again leaving the field early. She helped with milking the cows each morning and evening. She took care of the chickens, worked in the garden, canned fruits and vegetables, and helped cure the meat when hogs were killed in the early winter (always on a cold day, so the meat would not spoil before it could be cured). They did not use a smokehouse or smoke the meat, but used a sugar/salt curing process. This was kept in a "meat box", and provided most of the meat until chickens were large enough to be killed for fried chicken. The hams, shoulders, and "middles" were excellent, although these and the sausage began to be a little strong by the summer months. The "red-eye gravy" I remember as delicious. With the exception of boiled or baked chicken, and an occassional pot roast, all of the meat was fried, usually in lard rendered from the hog slaughtering. I can also remember her using corn to make hominy, and making lye soap which she used for washing clothes. They always had white leghorn chickens, and bought new chicks late each winter. By late spring and summer it was possible to determine the sex of these new chickens. The roosters were killed and fried chicken was served almost three meals a day. All of these were eaten, so the eggs they sold were non-fertile, and therefore brought a better price. They would sell several many dozen eggs each week. Later in the year some of the older hens would be killed and baked or boiled. Grandma always cooked on a kerosene stove, even after they moved to town in Sherman, and she was an expert on this stove. She did not travel much during most of her life, but in her later years she made trips with her daughter, Laura Belle, to California to visit her children Leslie, and Stella. This trip was made by train, and they traveled by coach both going and coming. She also made auto trips with Laura Belle and Josie to visit her nieces and nephews in west Texas, and at those times came by Sweetwater to visit our family. She spent a few months each year with Laura Belle in Beaumont, and it was on such a visit that she died in 1960. She was buried in Fairview Cemetery, Fannin County, beside her husband. They had rarely been apart during their married life. (This information submitted by her grandson, Clark Johnson, Jr.)
