James L. was born in Harris County, Ga. In 1836, when he was barely 3 years old, his father and two of his father's brothers had served a short time in the Georgia malitia to guard the Georgia territory from West Point to Columbus from feared Indian attack by the Cheek Indians of Alabama. Their home was about 10 or 15 miles from the Chattahoochee river that forms the boundary between the two states. He moved to Tallapoosa county, Al. about 1844/45 with his parents, three brothers and two sisters. The move was roughly 50 or 60 miles, but it was into very primitive territory where they became some of the first settlers in the area. After moving to Alabama they must have worked very hard to establish a home and provide for a growing family. He and Martha were married in 1853. Census records suggest that he and Martha lived close to his father's homestead a few miles northwest of Daviston, perhaps on the 40 acres his father owned that was a quarter-mile east to the 160 acre home place. Soon there were five children - David C., Mary K., Martha J., Laura and John - in the household. Then the Civil War erupted and he and three of his brothers joined the Confederate Army. James L. was a cobbler and served in the shoe and saddle shops in Columbus, Georgia. We have the copies of CSA records showing that the Shoe Shops in Columbus, Ga., Roll dated 21 Apr 1864, paid him $2000 for work on 100 pairs of shoes at 20 cents per pair. Three af his brothers, Franklin M., Benjamin H. and William A. lost their lives in this conflict, but our ancestor survived and returned to his home near Daviston, Tallapoosa county, Alabama.

In January 1866 they moved to Marshall County, Tennessee snd the sixth child, Benjamin F. was born in April of that year. They stayed in Tennessee about seven years but there is no record of them ever owning any property there. Two more children were born in Marshall county - Sarah Louise and James L. Jr. They may have become acquainted with the Patterson Family while there. The Pattersons were a very prominent family in Marshall and adjoining counties.

In 1874 he, and his family moved to Delta County, Texas. Mary Katherine may have stayed there because she married Green Wilson in Marshall County, Tennessee. In Delta County, Texas they settled in an area northeast of Cooper - Enloe and Unitia are two of the communities. They apparently prospered there and owned a considerable amount of land. Their children reached adulthood and married there. That is, all except Thomas, the youngest who married after they moved to Uvalde County. Two Patterson brothers and their families arrived in Delta and Lamar counties - George and Newton Patterson. Soon two of the Milam children were to marry Pattersons. David Cicero married the daughter of George and Martha married the son of Newton! There was a Milam School in this area of Delta County and local records show that it was named after a "Milam Family Who Contributed To And Was Interested In Education" It does not name the family, but I feel sure it must have been the D. C. Milam family or the James L. Milam family - or both.

In 1890 son, David Cicero, wife and 6 children moved to Uvalde County, Texas. Sons John and Benjamin moved to Indian Territory (Oklahoma), but I don't know the date. About 1892 James Lafayette and Martha moved to Uvalde county also and we presume that youngest son, Thomas went with them (or had gone earlier). James L. started and operated a bottling business in Uvalde which he operated for about 4 years. After that he ranched with his son, D. C. and helped with the extensive apiary. He was small of stature and was known as "Little Grandpa" by his grand children and great-grandchildren. He and his wife were well known and highly respected members of the community. Research of Martha's ancestors has been difficult. There were several prominent Dunn Families in Tallapoosa county, Alabama and some of then very near the Milam family near Daviston. It is known that she had 3 brothers and that after the death of her father, her mother married a Mr. J. B. Griffin. who had children. We now know that her mother's name was Rachael and her father was probably John J. Dunn. The latter has not been definitely confirmed at this time. [See chapter on Related Families.] They were members of The Church Of Christ. James L. and Martha are buried in Uvalde Cemetery, Uvalde, Texas.
