!DEATH: Died in the Civil War.

!NOTES: William L. Smith was born in 1840 and enlisted in the Confederate Army on October 31, 1861. He was the first to join and his brother, Presley Smith also joined the same company. Both Presley and William were "teamsters" in the war. Both of them were captured at Fort Hindman, Arkansas, and were sent to Camp Douglas in Chicago. Both were released at the same time from Camp Douglas and returned to their duties. They were both at Chickamauga and several other battles. William was promoted to a corporal on March 7, 1864. William was captured on July 22, 1864 during the battle of Atlanta. The record on July 23rd was that he had been "Wounded right hip." He was released from the hosital. And he came back to the hospital on August 4, 1864. The record noted, "gun shot wound, right hip." He died the next day, August 5, 1864 and is probably buried in the Marrietta, Georgia Confederate Cemetery. He is one of the 3000 that buried at that cemetery that are "unknown".
