!NOTES: Johnson family records. Buried in Johnson Cemetery in Fannin County, TX.

!NOTES: Betty Elizabeth Johnsons father was Samuel Johnson. Mother was Malinda Kitching and her husband was David Nichless Price. Samual Johnson was born in Warren Co, GA on August 18, 1812 and died November 9, 1887 in Fannin Co, TX. He was the son of Abner J. Johnson who was born in Warren Co, GA on September 3 1792 and died in Fannin Co, TX on November 22, 1883. At the age of 24, Samuel and his brother Alfred left Georgia for Texas in February, 1836. The arrived at San Jacinto just after the battle was over. They were then put under Captian Mabbitt and helped with the prisoners. Sameul was discharged from the Texas Army in Victoria on July 22, 1836. (Was in 1st Regiment, Company C) He received a land grand of 2/3 of a league in Fannin County on the North Sulphur Creek for service in the Texas Army. After discharge from the Texas Army, he joined the Texas Rangers. He served under many different men and at different places. One such place was the burning of Waco Village where his name is on the plaque at Ft Fisher in Waco. Records show that he was a lieutenant in Captain James Bourland's Co. in 1841 and a Captain of the Ranger Spy Company under Tarrent. While at Fort Warren, he helped quell an Indian uprising. He met and married Malinda Kitching and they had 10 children all being raised in Fannin County. Samuel died November 9, 1887 at 75 and his wife Malinda on April 22, 1902. They are both buried at Johnson Cemetery, north of Savoy. John K their third son (1851-1931) had a son Charles Johnson of Denison who still has the gun which S. J. used to guard Santa Anna's troups after their capture at San Jacinto. Information from Leon Hollingsworth

!BIRTH: From Charles F. Johnson, grandson, in Denison, Texas. In ANCESTORS AND DESCENDANTS OF GRAYSON COUNTY, TEXAS. Houston Public Genealogy Library. Gen 976.433 A538 Page 113-114. Copy provided by Robert Michael Johnson of Houston. Agrees with Fannin County census rolls of 1860, 1870, 1880. As above. His wife's sister, Melissa (Malissa, etc.) married Samuel's brother, Alfred.

!DEATH: As above. Buried in Kitchens (Kitchings)-Johnson Cemetery in Fannin County near Caney Creek and Red River (Now on private property). In the C. L. Greenwood Index: Obituaries, in the Barker History Center, Austin, Texas, there is the following: Johnson, Samuel - "Died at his home near Warren [in Fannin Co] at 1 o'clock P.M., Wednesday [Nov 16, 1887]. Mr. Johnson was one of the heroes of San Jacinto; has lived in Fannin County for more than 40 years." ---Bonham News.--- Northern Standard, Nov 24, 1887, p4, col 1. [Since this was published on Nov 24, 1887, this date for his death may be correct rather than the date of 9 Nov in the data above. However with a difference of only one week, the date in the data may be correct.]

!NOTES: He came to Texas early, probably in 1836. He served in the Texas Revolution Army, and later in the Texas Rangers. (See details in Charles Johnson's account in reference above). He received a land grant in Fannin County, and lived there until his death. He and his wife had 11 children, and also took care of his father and his mother-in-law. In short, he was a typical pioneer of his day. Mrs A. E. Johnson (wife of henry Lloyd Johnson) of Waco had information from one of the following: Charles F. Johnson of Denison, Leon Hollingsworth of Savoy, or Alvis Johnson of Sonora (all were grandchildren of Samuel) that Samuel operated a restaurant for a time in Houston. He moved from Houston to Milam County (now Falls County), and then settled in Fannin County in August of 1842. He settled on Caney Creek in Fannin County in November 1843. During his service in the Texas Rangers he was in several different locations. He was apparently one of the Rangers who burned the Waco village, and his name is on the plaque at Fort Fisher in Waco.
