A word of caution is in order here concerning the early Townsend history. We have assumed, as a working hypothesis, that Light Townsend who married Delilah Pouncey and Thomas Townsend who married Anaphilada Watson were brothers, along with the other siblings listed in that family. We have also assumed the ancestry we list for them is correct. However, we have no documented evidence for this. Given the recurrence of the name Light, it seems reasonable, but we emphasize that it is ONLY a hypothesis.
There is also some confusion about the death of Light Townsend. Some researchers believe that, after Delilah's death, Light moved to Warren Co. KY where he remarried and raised a whole new family. There is a will for a Light Townsend, proved in 1817 in Warren Co. KY, listing heirs: wife Elizabeth Townsend. son Benjamin Townsend, daughter Polly Samples, daughters Annie, Lucy, Betsey and Nancy Townsend, son James Townsend, and grandchildren Sally, Patsy and Polly Townsend. This could be the Light Townsend who married Delilah, but other researchers believe that Light died about 1801 and is buried in an unmarked grave in Marlboro Co. SC. In this file, we assume that Light died in SC. The Light in KY is therefore not included. If anyone out there can shed some light (no pun intended!!) on this mystery, we would love to hear from you.
